When every scroll feels heavy, here’s how to stay informed without carrying the whole internet in your chest.

Sometimes, opening social media feels like walking straight into emotional overload.

You scroll once and it is bad news. Scroll again and it is another tragedy. Then a political issue. Then a heartbreaking update. Then somehow, a funny meme about the same bad news you just saw two posts ago.

Before you even realize it, your mood shifts. Your chest feels heavy. Your brain feels loud. And suddenly, you are carrying stories, updates, opinions, and pain that your body was never meant to process all at once.

For Gen Z, especially women who are often expected to be aware, empathetic, vocal, informed, and emotionally available, the pressure can feel even heavier.

But here is your reminder: You do not have to be grieving all the time to prove that you care.

You can care and still pause. You can stay informed and still protect your peace. You can feel sad about the world and still allow yourself to live.

Here are five things you can do when the bad news feels back-to-back.

1. Mute people, accounts, and words

When the same issue keeps appearing on your feed again and again, it can start to feel impossible to breathe. One of the simplest ways to take back control is to mute what keeps overwhelming you. This can mean muting specific people, news accounts, commentary pages, hashtags, names, locations, or keywords connected to the news.

This does not mean you do not care. It means you are choosing when you are ready to engage.

How to do it:

Go to your app settings and look for “muted words,” “hidden words,” or “content preferences.” You can also mute certain accounts for a few days if their posts are starting to feel too heavy. Your feed is your space. You are allowed to make it feel safer.

2. Stop reading the comments when you can

Sometimes, the comment section feels heavier than the news itself. There may be arguments, misinformation, cruel jokes, insensitive takes, or people turning serious situations into content. When you are already overwhelmed, reading more reactions may not give you clarity. It may only make you feel worse.

You are allowed to read the update and leave.

How to do it:

After reading the main post or article, close the app before opening the comments. Remind yourself that you do not need everyone’s opinion to understand that something is sad, serious, or painful.

Not every comment section deserves your emotional energy.

3. Replace doomscrolling with one grounding action

When the internet feels too loud, your body needs something real. Let go of your phone. Look outside. Stretch your body. Take a short walk. Drink water. Wash your face. Fix your bed. Pray. Hold your pet. Make coffee. Take a shower. Breathe slowly.

It sounds small, but one grounding action can remind your body that you are here, in the present, and not trapped inside the screen.

How to do it:

Before opening another app, do one physical thing. Stand up, step away from your phone, and look at something that is not a screen.

Even a five-minute walk or a few deep breaths can help interrupt the doomscrolling loop.

4. Create a soft feed

Your feed does not always have to be breaking news, hot takes, and discourse. Create a softer corner of the internet for yourself. Follow accounts that make you feel calm, hopeful, inspired, or comforted. This can include art pages, pets, books, fashion, food, faith, cozy home content, affirmations, fitness, nature, or creators who make you laugh without making you feel guilty.

This does not mean you are choosing ignorance. It means you are giving your mind somewhere to rest.

How to do it:

Save posts that make you feel lighter. Follow accounts that feel gentle. Visit those pages on heavy days instead of going straight to your main feed. You can stay aware of the world without surrounding yourself with pain all day.

5. Remember that you are allowed to live

This is the part many women need to hear: You are allowed to have a good day even when the news is bad.

You are allowed to laugh at a joke, enjoy your food, wear a pretty outfit, go to work, celebrate small wins, rest, post a photo, pray, and feel okay.

Your constant sadness will not fix the world. Your burnout will not make you more compassionate. Your exhaustion is not proof that you care more.

How to do it:

When guilt starts to creep in, remind yourself: “I can care without carrying everything.” Bad news can be heartbreaking, but you do not have to hold all of it all day.

The bottom line

When the bad news feels back-to-back, pause.

Mute what you need to mute. Step away from the comments. Put your phone down. Look outside. Move your body. Build a softer feed. Let yourself breathe. You can care deeply and still protect your peace. Stay informed, but stay whole.
