I’ve probably ordered from this Vietnamese restaurant nearly 50 times, and somehow, I’m still not tired of it.

I have a very strong opinion about where to find the best pho in the Philippines, and I will gladly defend it. It’s not in a fancy restaurant or a massive food establishment. It’s tucked away in Manila, near Taft Avenue, and it’s called Pho Mahal. If you know me personally, there’s a pretty good chance I’ve already told you about this place. And if I haven’t, consider this your official introduction.

My love affair with Pho Mahal started when my boyfriend’s cousin, Chris, invited us to eat there. I honestly had no idea that this relatively unassuming Vietnamese restaurant would eventually become such a big part of our lives. Back when Elijah and I were still living in Taft, it became one of our go-to places whenever we wanted to order food. You know those restaurants you discover once and suddenly find yourself craving every other week? That was Pho Mahal for us.

Fast-forward to today, and I genuinely think I’ve ordered from this restaurant close to 50 times already. I wish I were exaggerating, but I'm really not. I've made it a personal mission to introduce practically everyone I know to Pho Mahal because good food deserves to be shared. Elijah even jokingly gets mad at me whenever he discovers I've eaten there without him. Apparently, going to Pho Mahal without your boyfriend is a relationship offense now. HAHAHA.

And because I apparently cannot stop talking about this place, I've even managed to convert my mom, who absolutely LOVES pho. She's particular about the food she enjoys, so getting her approval felt like a little personal victory. Now, she casually brings up Pho Mahal in conversations even when we're talking about something completely unrelated. I've officially created another Pho Mahal ambassador in the family, and I couldn't be happier.

Now, let's talk about the food because this is where things get serious. My absolute favorite order is their beef pho, and I always get the large serving. ALWAYS. There's something incredibly comforting about a generous bowl of warm broth, rice noodles, beef, and fresh vegetables. It's the meal I can eat whether I'm having a stressful day, celebrating something, or simply craving something delicious. And here's my very important tip: USE THE SAUCES ON THE TABLE. Don't be shy, and definitely don't use them sparingly. Add, mix, taste, and adjust until you've created your perfect bowl. That's part of the experience for me.

Of course, I rarely stop at just the pho. Another favorite is their fresh spring rolls. They're light, refreshing, and such a lovely contrast to the warm noodle soup. My personal recommendation is to dip them generously into their tangy vinegar sauce. And when I say generously, I mean GENEROUSLY. The dipping sauce makes every bite even better, and I genuinely look forward to it whenever we order.

What I also appreciate about Pho Mahal is how straightforward the experience is. Located along P. Ocampo Street in Malate, this casual Vietnamese restaurant serves more than just noodle soup, with dishes like bánh mì, fried spring rolls, Vietnamese rice meals, and coffee on its menu. You don't need a special occasion to visit. Sometimes, all you need is a really good bowl of pho and someone to share it with.

I think that's what makes Pho Mahal so special to me. It's not just about finding a restaurant that makes delicious food. It's about the memories we've created around it, from Chris introducing us to the place, to our countless food deliveries during our Taft days, to bringing my mom and watching her fall in love with it too.

I'm sure there are plenty of incredible Vietnamese restaurants across the Philippines, and I'd love to discover more of them. But for now, Pho Mahal still holds the top spot in my heart. After nearly 50 orders, countless recommendations, and a boyfriend who refuses to be left out of my Pho Mahal trips, I think it's safe to say this little Manila restaurant has earned a permanent place on my favorites list.

And yes, I'll probably order from them again very soon. I think this article convinced me to write again.
