Going to the movies has always been more than just watching a film. It is a habit, a date idea, a family plan, and sometimes even a small celebration.

Many of us remember our first cinema dates with a new boyfriend, sitting side by side in the dark and pretending to focus on the movie. We remember rushing to catch the last full show with siblings and cousins, or parents telling everyone to hurry because the trailers were about to start.
We remember packed cinemas during holidays and the quiet feeling of walking out of a late night screening still thinking about the ending.
In 2026, SM Cinema is investing in that experience.
As the largest film exhibitor in the Philippines, SM Cinema is rolling out nationwide theater upgrades designed to improve comfort, technology, and overall atmosphere. The goal is simple. Make the cinema feel worth returning to.

SM Cinema San Lazaro leads the rollout with its newly redeveloped branch. It now features two Directors Club cinemas for a more premium viewing experience, along with four modernized Regular Cinemas. The updates also include a refreshed Snack Time counter with a colorful popcorn bar and upgraded lobby installations that make the space feel more current and inviting.
Outside Metro Manila, SM Lanang in Davao and SM City Clark in Pampanga are set to introduce IMAX with Laser. This next generation format delivers sharper visuals, stronger contrast, and more precise sound. For blockbuster films and large scale productions, the difference is noticeable. The screen feels bigger, the audio clearer, and the overall experience more immersive.

These upgrades build on the launch of the country’s first SCREENX theater at SM Mall of Asia in 2025. SCREENX expands select scenes onto the side walls of the cinema, creating a wider field of view that surrounds the audience.
New SM Supermalls are also opening nationwide, including SM City Zamboanga in March 2026, bringing upgraded cinema experiences to more communities across the country.
The focus on technology is important, but so is the shared experience. Watching a film at home is convenient, but it is often distracted. In a cinema, attention is different. The lights dim. Phones are put away. The audience reacts together. Laughter spreads faster. Emotional scenes feel heavier when you are not alone.

SM Cinema is positioning its 2026 upgrades around that idea. Premium formats such as Directors Club, IMAX, SCREENX, and Event Cinema allow audiences to choose how they want to watch. More comfort. Bigger screens. Clearer sound. A more elevated setting.
At the same time, accessibility remains part of the strategy. This Valentine’s season, moviegoers can watch the romantic film The Loved One starring Anne Curtis and Jericho Rosales for P275 in Metro Manila and P230 in provincial locations at SM Cinema. The upgrades are meant to enhance the experience without making it feel exclusive.
In 2026, the cinema is not just a place to watch a film. It is still where relationships unfold, families bond, and friends create inside jokes in the middle of a two hour story.
SM Cinema’s upgrades strengthen that tradition with better technology and improved spaces, while keeping the core of moviegoing the same. Sit down. Watch together. Feel something.
