Inside Gatekeep Davao: The City’s Newest Grown-Up Catch-Up Spot

Davao City has a new destination for intimate dinners, creative cocktails, and long-overdue conversations with friends. Meet Gatekeep Davao, a speakeasy restaurant and bar designed for a proper grown-up catch-up.

Even before you enter, Gatekeep already gives you something to talk about. The entrance is hidden behind a painting created by one of the owners. Interestingly, the artworks were originally supposed to be displayed and sold inside the restaurant. Instead, they became one of the most defining elements of the entire Gatekeep experience.

Once you step inside, you are greeted by an intimate and mysterious atmosphere that feels removed from the busy city outside.

According to architect Gabriel Licao, the space was inspired by the nostalgic and secretive character of classic speakeasy bars. The thoughtful interplay of light and shadow helps create a warm, cinematic environment that feels both elegant and comfortable.

It eminates the feeling when a place makes you want to settle into your seat, order a drink, and stay for hours.

Food Worth Sharing

The food is easily one of the highlights of Gatekeep Davao.

We started with several dishes for the table, including the Cream Cheese Wontons, Chicken Poppers, and Salted Egg Shrimp. These are great options for groups because they are easy to share while everyone catches up over drinks.

The Cream Cheese Wontons were crispy and creamy, while the Chicken Poppers made for an easy crowd-pleasing snack. The Salted Egg Shrimp was another standout, especially for those who enjoy bold and savory flavors.

Creative Cocktails at Gatekeep Davao

Gatekeep also offers an impressive drink selection, ranging from familiar classics to more playful and thoughtfully curated cocktails.

The drink we could not stop talking about was the Sine Sine Popcorn. Inspired by the experience of watching a movie with popcorn, the cocktail was creative, memorable, and surprisingly delicious. It felt like part of the Gatekeep experience.

For guests who want something more familiar, there are also classic cocktails available. However, trying at least one of Gatekeep’s signature creations is highly recommended.

A Place for Memories

There is also a photobooth inside the restaurant where guests can take home a small memory from the evening. It is a fun addition to the space, especially when you are visiting with friends or celebrating a special occasion.

I visited Gatekeep with one of my high school best friends, Khryaz. We stayed in one of the comfortable booths and spent the evening eating, drinking, and catching up. A small warning: the booths can get quite cold, so bring a jacket or shawl if you plan to stay for a while. We also spotted an adorable painting of a dog inside, which naturally became another highlight of the visit.

Gatekeep Davao is more than just a restaurant or cocktail bar. From its hidden entrance and artistic interiors to its shareable food and creative drinks, every element contributes to the experience. It is an ideal place for date nights, celebrations, intimate dinners, or catching up with friends you have not seen in a long time.

For anyone looking for a new place to eat and drink in Davao City, Gatekeep deserves a spot on your list. Just remember to bring good company, and maybe a jacket.
