High School Musical Turns 20 Years Old

There are movies you watch, and then there are movies you grow up inside, and High School Musical was very much the latter. Released in 2006, it soundtracked childhood afternoons, school fairs, and living room dance routines, becoming a cultural marker for an entire generation that learned friendship, confidence, and teamwork through song.

For many of us, it was not just a movie but a role we fought for. There were elementary school debates over who got to be Gabriella, who had Troy’s lines memorized, and who, very proudly, claimed Sharpay. I remember desperately wanting to be Sharpay, drama, confidence, pink outfits and all, while everyone else insisted they were Gabriella. That was the magic of it. Every character felt like someone you knew or wanted to become.

As the film turns 20, its cast is looking back with the same warmth fans still feel. Ashley Tisdale, who played Sharpay Evans, shared, “I’m so grateful for what this movie has given me, and for the fans who made it what it is.” Vanessa Hudgens, our Gabriella, echoed the sentiment, thanking everyone who had been there since day one and reminding fans that “we’ll always be in this together.”
The anniversary celebration feels fitting for a film that continues to adapt with its audience. Disney recently released the full movie on TikTok, cut into bite-sized parts, proving that even two decades later, High School Musical still knows how to meet fans where they are.
More than the songs or choreography, what lasts is the feeling. The belief that you could try something new, step onto a different court, and still belong. Twenty years later, we are still singing along, still choosing sides, and still very much all in this together.
